Countdown to Christmas #3: Christmas Trees

After Santa, the Christmas tree is perhaps the most recognizable secular symbol of Christmas. As a kid, I always got excited when the Christmas tree was setup because it was fun place to play with my GI Joes (Christmas tree lights make great lasers). As my brother and I got older, my mom got picky about what kind of ornaments went on the tree, so we each got a small three foot fake tree for our bedrooms, on which we could hang our handmade and fun ornaments.

I love having a Christmas tree, but I really don't like hanging ornaments. Nowadays, that's become Mrs. Teebore's obsession (while I tend to get finicky about the outdoor lights) and she'll randomly get up and move an ornament from one spot on the tree to another for a few days after setting it up.

Of course, being a geek, most of our ornaments these days are pretty geeky (sorry for the crappy pictures):

There's Spider-Man and the Hulk...

...the Justice League...

A Star Wars contingent...

...including a light up ornament that recreates the Anakin/Obi-Wan duel from the end of Revenge of the Sith, complete with dialogue from the movie...

and Peter from Family Guy.

  1. ha! those ornaments are hilarious!
we always had real trees when we were young. sometimes we'd even take the dog and cut our own- pretty often actually. We'd help decorate the trees while the Beetles marathon played on the radio (or Beetles records played on the record player)
Just in the last 3 years we've all broken down and gotten fake trees.

  2. @Anne: Yeah, when I was younger we always had a real tree (though we never cut our own) and then sometime in college my parents switched to fake.

Mrs. Teebore and I have always had fake ones. It's just so much easier: don't have to buy it every year, water it, vacuum up the needles, etc.

It also helps that the fake trees have gotten really good over the last ten years or so. My grandparents had one when I was younger that was just awful.

  3. sometimes we'd listen to queen too.
Your ornaments are much cooler than ours. Most of ours are from the dollar store as we slowly build a collection

Ours are a collection of those geeky ornaments and leftovers from our childhoods. A lot of the geeky ones I've had for years and adorned the little individual tree I had in my bedroom in high school (and my brother never put up a tree, so some of them are his old ornaments too).

Plus, I usually end up getting a new ornament from somebody each year as a gift. The Episode III scene and Peter are both recent additions in that way.

  5. I'm totes jealous of your ornaments! Every time I try to grab some during our yearly shopping trip, I get the head shake from the Boss. I did pick up some cool ones this year at Target and some at Kowalski's the other day. They so purdy.

I prefer fake trees because I hate all the mess of the real ones. I do love the smell though.

OMG my WV is: mancub hahaha, Jungle Book.

The Boss is just a fun sqausher, isn't he? At least he likes A Christmas Story

Ditto. Thankfully, Mrs. Teebore is able to compensate for it with her candle-based wizardry.

  7. He is a Buzz Killington. Too many serious thoughts. Good thing I'm the exact opposite! mu-hahaha!! I've loosened him up a lot.

Awwww, I wish I knew candle wizardry. I do light a mean stick of incense.

    Aw! You're already a Hmphy Grandpa :)

I have very few ornaments because of The Trees of Death that came into our home 2 Christmases ago...
I shall have to make a post about those bastards.

Totally. I also get agitated when kids run across my lawn and I keep the thermostat low to save money. Seriously.

Indeed, I want to know the story!

  10. My grandparents had a deliciously tacky tree, and as much as I love the elegance of little white lights they don't compare to the nostalgia of ridiculously large color bulbs and tinsel that just smells carcinogenic. We used to make ornaments at their house, sticking little sequins and things on styrofoam balls. The comparatively few ornaments I've accumulated as an adult are heavy on stuff like the Batmobile and a big Superman-changing-in-a-phone-booth that you can plug into a light strand to make it revolve.

Oh yeah, my grandparents had a tree like that when I was younger. And I've seen home movies from when my mom was a kid, and the tree was even tackier. They get tackier the further back in time we go!

Ah, yeah, I have a Batmobile from the Batman TV show ornament. I've seen that Superman phone booth one, too.
