Countdown to Christmas #21: The Muppet Christmas Carol

The Muppet Christmas Carol is my favorite Christmas movie, one I watch in whole or in part every year. The movie takes the standard story of A Christmas Carol and adds the Muppets (including Kermit as Bob Cratchett, Fozzie Bear as Fezziwig and Statler & Waldorff as the Marley Brothers), Michael Caine as Scrooge, original songs and fourth wall breaking narration from Gonzo (as Charles Dickens) and Rizzo the Rat.

Oddly enough, given that the Ghost of Christmas Present is usually the most boring Ghost (what with the lack of time travel and all), the Present ghost in this adaptation is a hoot, and my favorite song from the movie comes during his segment:

  1. I've always felt that Jacob Marley was the most boring ghost. All he does is rattle some chains and talk about what the other cool ghosts are going to do.

  2. i'm sure i've seen this in it's entirety, but i just don't remember really anything about it.
We're not big on muppets in our family

  3. Excellent choice! We've looked for the soundtrack, just to get that particular song. Need to hear it all year long.

Good point. At least the Ghost of Christmas Present can teleport and whatnot.

In fact, I was going to say that at least Marley is the scariest ghost, but that honor usually goes to the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come.

So yeah, Marley does kinda get the shaft.

Man, you are Communist. And you're not big on Muppets, yet you like Farscape. ;)

For many, many years that soundtrack was one of my holy grail soundtracks, something I looked for whenever I was hunting for used CDs and whatnot. It was out of print for years and pricey on eBay and such.

Thankfully, they re-released it a few years back and I received a copy for Christmas (from Baroness van Bitzenhofer, if memory serves).

  5. I LOVE Muppet Christmas Carol! And I haven't had a chance to watch all of it yet this year. Ooh! Sounds like something to go do now!

I also own the CD soundtrack and listen to it pretty much year round whenever I'm in the mood for "It Feels Like Christmas"- it also has two deleted songs, one by Beaker and Dr. Honeydew and one by Sam the Eagle. yay!

I greatly appreciate the inclusion of those songs on the CD.
