THE NERD WITHIN - New Avengers: The Reunion (2009)

Skrulls.

I don't pay too much attention to the wide reaching comics blog-o-sphere so I miss a lot of the current "backlash" that runs therein, however I believe there is a common concensus that the whole SECRET SKRULL INVASION mega-event sucked unshorn donkey balls.

Hawkeye has always been one of my favorite characters. I first became aware of him at the start of my comic reading days as he smoothly advised me in the back of some issues that I could save almost $3.00 a year!

Then he died, apparently.

And came back as a ninja. Normally ninjas are sweet but I wasn't buying this Ronin thing.

Hawkeye was married to Mockingbird. Her personality was that she was the chick that hung around Hawkeye. Then, she wasn't around. Apparently, she died, too. I never really noticed.

So, then Mockingbird shows up in the middle of this SECRET INVASION thing saying "I didn't die. The Skrull who replaced me did!" and we're meant to be all "whoop-i-dee do" but I was more "whoop-i-dee don't care".

That was until I read NEW AVENGERS: The Reunion.

Writer Jim McMann transforms Mockingbird into a strong female lead you can care about and turns Hawkeye into the boy who desperately wants to get the girl but the girl is more intent on beating people up at the moment.

Hawkeye and Mockingbird are now MR and MRS SMITH ( the version in my head where the movie is clever and funny. I never saw the movie since I heard it was neither funny nor clever.)

You even get to see what happened to Mockingbird while she was a SKRULL prisoner! And it's cool! Unlike SKRULLS. Who still suck. And should have stayed cows.

For those of you who have Marvel Digital Comic Subscriptions, check out this series! For those who don't, jump on ebay or peruse your local comic shop and pick it up.

  3. @Falen: wait - why does this post only show on google reader, but doesn't show when i head to the home page of the blog?

Because it's dated when he first started the post (last week) so it appears further down, below posts with more current dates.

    I'll fix it.

Then I'll actually read it and post a comment about it...

  4. Yay, Boots is back!

I have a copy of this on my "to read" pile thanks to a used copy I picked up cheap at B&N. I shall have to move it further up that stack.

however I believe there is a common concensus that the whole SECRET SKRULL INVASION mega-event sucked unshorn donkey balls.

That might be overstating it a bit, but yeah, that's the general consensus.

Though to be fair, the comics blog-o-sphere hates most everything...

And came back as a ninja. Normally ninjas are sweet but I wasn't buying this Ronin thing.

Ditto. I was fine with Ronin when we thought he was Daredevil, or when we learned she was Echo, but Hawkeye was already cool; he didn't need to be cooled up more by becoming a ninja. Plus, while he did get to use cool ninja weapons like nunchuks, he didn't use a freakin' bow and arrows, which is kinda Hawkeye's thing...

I do like the female Hawkeye he allowed to use his name in Young Avengers, but frankly, there's no reason they couldn't both have been Hawkeye.

Her personality was that she was the chick that hung around Hawkeye.

    Ha!

Actually, she did have a bit of personality back during their West Coast Avengers days. If you like the Hawkeye/Mockingbird dynamic you should definitely check them out, though I should warn you, it will sully your opinion of Hawkeye a bit (there's a running plot that involves a bit of gross mis-characterization on Hawkeye's part) but will give you a better appreciation for Mockingbird.

It looks like very little of it is available digitally from Marvel.com though. Hopefully that'll change.

Apparently, she died, too. I never really noticed.

Aw...I remember being fairly bummed when she died. Partially cuz she died like a chump, but still.

    And should have stayed cows.

Ha! As you may or may not know, those Skrull cows eventually got turned into hamburger and eaten, leading to the creation of the Skrull Kill Krew.

If that sounds batshit insane, it's cuz Grant Morrison came up with the idea.

  6. I used to go to every Brad Pitt movie with a female friend of mine and I still think he's a great actor. Perhaps I shall check out Mr. & Mrs. Smith if it's on Netflix.

Thanks for adjusting the post, Teebore. I was wondering how to do that.

I am back! Baby and such has kept me busy the past several months but due to weird sleeping hours I'm sure I'll feel like posting at 2am sometimes!

The nunchuks are explained in a pretty cool way in this series and the characterization of Hawkeye is true yet rounds him out even more.

The follow up series to this, HAWKEYE & MOCKINGBIRD, is pretty good as well!

I'm currently collecting WEST COAST AVENGERS WEST COAST since I always like the few comics i read in the series and I'm missing about 6 issues of SOLO AVENGERS. Once I sit down and read them I'm sure I'll give Mockingbird a little more credit. My puberty riddled mind didn't care for the plain demeanor of her especially when all of the X-girls were smoking. Now that I'm no longer 12, I'll see things unclouded by raging hormones.

Ah . . . Grant Morrison. Thank God all writers don't rely on cocaine and sniffing cat urine!

In your defense, it certainly did Mockingbird no favors to have the majority of her appearances in West Coast Avengers drawn by Al Milgrom, one of the worst comic book pencillers ever.
