Brief Thoughts About Baseball (6/8/2009 - 6/14/2009)

1. This is always scary.

2. On Tuesday the Twins win the game 10 to 5...but it was 10 to 0 going into the 9th inning. They bring in Baker and proceeds to not get an out. So they go to the bullpen, who can barely get an out themselves. Finally, Nathan has to come in up by 5 with the bases loaded and gets the save (because the tying run was on deck). I can't recall a 10-5 win feeling more like a loss than that game.

3. On Wednesday the Twins beat Oakland 6 to 3, but it felt like a better win than Tuesday's 10 to 5 victory. Go figure.

4. Milton 'Candyland' Bradley needs to learn a game called "Count The Number of Outs."

5. Last week I talked about that time Randy Johnson hit a bird with a pitch. Well, I guess that was some sort dark prophecy for birds.

6. And if that's tough way to lose a game, this takes the cake!

7. You know Mauer, Morneau, and Kubel are all great. But part of me thinks the player the Twins can least afford to lose is Joe Nathan.

8. Remember Torii Hunter?

9. Have rumors of Big Poppi's demise been greatly exaggerated? (Also, Boston...you can quit the curtain calls anytime.)

10. Since Tuesday Justin Morneau is 5 for 22 with 2 Runs and that's about it. Nothing to panic about just yet, but Morneau is more than capable of going into extended slumps and it looks like he's trying too hard to home runs right now. I'm getting a little concerned, but I'm no expert. So take that for what it's worth.

  1. 4. Heh. I continue to get entirely too much amusement out of that. It would have been better, though, if Harris was able to score from third on the next play in such a way that he wouldn't have done so without Bradley's error.

    5. What have the birds ever done to you?

    6. Oh, the hapless Mets. I laugh and feel bad, all at the same time.

    7. Agreed. For a variety of reasons, but most of all, because he's the only reliever we have that I feel confident can get an out when its needed. I mean, obviously, other relievers can, but you just never know if this is one of the times they will get an out or one of the times they will ineffectively flail away out there.

Nathan's not perfect, but damn close, and you at least feel confident he'll get his job done when he comes into a game.

    8. I'd make some crack about Hunter vs. Gomez, who managed to hit his *cough* first homer of the season Sunday but, well, eh, it's all been said. Good for Torii though.

    9. I hope not. Does that make me a bad person? It's nothing against Papi, just Boston fans.

And seriously, the fawning curtain calls need to stop. They almost feel like when parents overpraise a toddler for doing something grown ups do all the time. "Who's a a big boy that didn't spill all over himself?" or something like that.

    10. Gardy was discussing this on his radio show Sunday morning, and basically said the same thing: that all players go into slumps throughout the season, but he's not too worried yet. He also added that Morneau had a couple of long outs in Seattle and Oakland that would have been homers at the Dome. And the hosts added that it is kind of funny to say someone batting around .330 is in a slump, but I think you're right: history shows Morneau is capable of some TREMENDOUS slumps, especially when he starts really trying to hit home runs, which is what he looks to be doing. We shall see, I suppose.
