 World War Z (Movie, 2013) - Not only was it not as good as the book (or anything like it) it just wasn't good period.

Hey, why don't I review some things I've recently (and not so recently) seen/read? And, just for a change, why don't I do each review in one sentence?

Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN (Book, James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales 2011) - It was interesting but not as salacious as I was expecting.

Hey! It's been a while since I've done some One Sentence Reviews. So...how about some One Sentence Reviews!

Mass Effect 3 (X-Box 360 Video Game, 2012) - This was a series where the thought of them screwing up the ending never crossed my mind...they screwed up the ending.

Skyrim (X-Box 360 Video Game, 2012) - The problem with these type of games is that the ending can never live up to the copious amount of time I've put into them.

Ready Player One (Novel, Ernest Cline, 2012) - A really fun and engaging book and a must read for all geeks out there.

Summer Movie Report Card 2011

That's right, the State Fair is over and the movies are decidedly less blockbuster-y, which means it's time once again for the summer movie report card!

I'm going to these "one sentence review" (or so) style, as any more than that and I start to get repetitive.

The Marvel film with the greatest potential for disaster, it actually turned out pretty good, keeping the events on Earth from getting too boring and managing to make the action on Asgard fun without being too campy.

I suppose it's time for another round of One Sentence Reviews. I know you're excited...

Fable II (2008 Video Game) - Really fun and addictive action RPG that's a little too easy and has a terrible, terrible ending....but how can I not recommend a game where I can be a lesbian polygamist?








Rise of the Argonauts (2008 Video Game) - It was an entertaining enough game that reimagines Greek mythology, but it felt like it was only 75% complete.





I Love You Man (2009 Movie) - One of those very funny movies where you find yourself utterly unconcerned with any conflict that occurs in the plot.






Boom Blox (2008 Video Game) - This Jenga-esque puzzle game is fun for the whole family...but nearly ended my marriage.









United States of Tara (2008 Showtime Series) - I highly recommend this intriguing (and sometimes hilarious) series about a mother with multiple personalities.






X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009 Movie) - It's entertaining enough (with a lot of Easter eggs for the geeks out there), but make sure you turn your brain off before watching.

I think I'm overdue for another rousing round of One Sentence Reviews. But first, since I'm finally taking the poll down, for posterity's sake I will say that the final vote regarding what caused the dent in the airplane's nose was this:

God of War 2 (Playstation 2 Video Game): Meet a legendary Greek hero, kill a legendary Greek hero...what could be better?



His Dark Materials (Fantasy Series by Phillip Pullman): I loved the first book, liked the second one, and struggled through the third.



Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008 Movie): Really, for the name being what it was, Guantanamo Bay had little to do with this but if you loved the first movie you'll like this one.





Into the Wild (2007 Movie): The sense of tragic inevitability makes for an interesting viewing experience.





The Watchmen (DC "Graphic Novel"): Wholly dark and depressing but overall a good comic made even better when I realized it was written in 1986.




Babylon A.D. (2008 Movie): I thought it had a chance to be a cool futuristic action movie but when a director pans his own movie I'm suddenly not instilled with confidence.




Disaster Movie (2008 Movie): I have not seen this movie yet but I can guarantee you this is one of the most unoriginal, painfully unfunny pieces of trash this year.




Summer Olympics (2008): Just when I thought there was nothing lamer than the Olympics the NFL preseason comes along.

One Sentence Reviews

The Last Full Measure by Jeff Shaara (Historical Fiction novel): An entertaining novelization about the end of the Civil War in which neither Grant nor Lee are entirely the hero or the villain, the book really illustrated to me just how similar the Siege of Petersburg was to the WWI trench warfare it presaged.

April 1865 by Jay Winick (History book): A readable and enjoyable look at all the significant events that took place during that month (the fall of Richmond, the surrender of Lee and the assassination of Lincoln), I was particularly intrigued by just how close the government came to complete collapse in the wake of Lincoln’s death.

The March by E.L. Doctrow (Historical Fiction): Incredibly well-written and literary but difficult to finish due to a lack of compelling characters and plots.

Boston Celtics (Basketball team): I was really hoping the Lakers would pull a Giants and stick it to the obnoxious and spoiled Boston fans, but alas, ‘twas not meant to be…

MLB All-Star Game Voting (Baseball): Last I heard the Red Sox were leading the voting in something like six categories; memo to aforementioned Boston fans: it’s supposed to be the “All-Star” game, not the “Red Sox vs. the NL” game.

Top Chef (competition TV show): While this season was a bit dull (rage-inducing Lisa aside) and became “Top Caterer” more often than I would have liked, it was still a satisfying season.

Legacy of the Force: Revelations (Star Wars novel): Ha! Suck it Jacen: not everything always goes your way.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Guthrie Theater production): Awesome: the only Shakespearean adaptation I’ve ever seen with a Rambo impersonation, a drunk Practical, an Obama-esque Theseus, tearaway clothes, Faeries performing doowop, rock, soul, punk, rap and choral musical interludes, a cross-dressing Geisha, and a Riverdance-style finale to Pyramus and Thisbee, and it was funny, not just highbrow, literate, Shakespeare funny but laugh-out-loud, tears-rolling-down-my-face funny, all without changing the play itself.

Alright, it's back by popular demand! (Or my own laziness.) I'm gonna throw some more One Sentence Reviews at you.


Minnesota Vikings (2007 NFL Sports Team): I'm actually staring to believe in this team which means they're headed for a big time collapse.

Tales of the Abyss (Playstation 2 2006 Video Game): A very solid RPG with an interesting battle system but the game is long as hell and they expect people to play through it twice?


Beowulf (2007 Movie): Some cool action with a giant lull in the middle but, and I may sound like a cranky old man saying this, I can't believe this movie is rated PG-13.


The Departed (2006 Movie): Awesome!



Tin Man (2007 Sci-Fi Channel Mini-Series): The first installment shows that it has some promise but the problem with made for TV Movies/Miniseries (and the Sci-Fi channel especially suffers from this) is that the special effects are lacking to say the least.

The Transformers (2007 Movie): If you can ignore the plot holes this movie can be a lot of fun!

Enchanted: Mrs. Dr. Bitz says that I shouldn't be too harsh on this movie becuase I should keep in mind that this movie is intended for 10-year-old girls...I weep for 10-year-old girls everywhere.

One Sentence Reviews

Taking a page from Dr. Bitz's book...


3:10 to Yuma (theatrical film): a well made “classic” western-the ending makes sense, after some thought.

The Human Story (book by James Davis): It paints history with broader strokes than I would’ve liked, glossing over some finer points I felt were missing, but it is very readable and engaging-a book I will probably come back to at some point.










Across the Universe (theatrical film): It gave me a greater appreciation for Beatles music.










Runaways volume 3 (hardcover collection of Runaways vol. 2 issues 12-24): Not as engaging as the first two volumes (but I have read some of these issues before); still one of the best books out there.










Simpsons Season 10 (DVD): This season is really a bridge between two eras, not as good as the best stuff, but not as bad as the worst.












The World Series (uh...baseball): The damn Red Sox are going to win this, aren't they?

One Sentence Reviews

OK, let's face it. Half of what I write is crap. So I came up with the concept to filter out all that crap and give it to you stright: One Sentence Reviews. It will be a post where I go through different things in the media and review them in one sentence.
For the most part they will be things that either A) I suspect people really don't care about or B) are things I've just seen or read but have been around long enough that doing a full review would feel dated.
For example, let's say I just watched Tomb Raider 2 the movie the other week. Since it's like 4 years old giving it any formal review would seem silly. Instead, I'd give it a one sentence review that would probably look a little something like this: "If I was forced to choose between watching this movie again or firing a bullet through my brain then there would be one less blogger in the world."
(And yes, this intro will be longer than all the reviews combined)
Let's get started:

The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Compilation of 5 Novels by Douglas Adams):
Absolutely hilarious in parts but the ending left a terrible taste in my mouth.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Video Game on Wii/Gamecube):
With great sound, graphics, gameplay, and a good storyline it's everything a Zelda game should be.

Howl's Moving Castle (Movie 2004):
Excellently done animated movie that lacks a certain element (action among other things) for me to rank it as high as Princess Mononoke.

52 (Novelization of a DC Graphic Novel/Comic Book by the same name):
If you want a book that you can enjoy in a comic book-y sort of way then I have 52 reasons why you'd like this book, otherwise I have 52 reasons why you wouldn't.

Cavemen (TV Series on ABC):
For a sitcom about cavemen this show is awfully mundane.

Pushing Daisies (TV Series on ABC):
I think this show proves that a television series can in fact be TOO quirky.

Lady in the Water (Movie 2006):
She should have stayed there.
