- Homer Simpson, "'Tis the Fifteenth Season"
On this day, may you be a double-bacon genius burger, and just a little bit drunk.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all, a good night!

ReplyDeleteThanks and Merry Christmas right back atcha! I hope that you had a great day. And now I kinda want bacon too, even though I'm still stuffed from Christmas dinner.
ReplyDelete... I am, you can tell, a rather flexible Jew...

@Blam: ["Use the whole word!"]
ReplyDeleteAh, that still cracks me up, every time...
ReplyDeleteWhat I find really funny — beyond just the line reading; you can't not love Annie — is that the sentiment is so relatable and yet so contradictory.
I mean, Jews all over the place use the word "Jew". There is no "whole word" in noun form — you can say "Jewish", as a descriptor, but the only noun equivalent is "Jewish person" or "person of Jewish faith / heritage". And yet probably more than half the time I hear the word "Jew" (including coming from my own mouth) it does sound vaguely like, if not exactly a slur, then at least an inappropriately truncated slang form.
Maybe since she's a woman she means the archaic "Jewess"? I've always loved that one.

ReplyDeleteSimilarly, Dr. Bitz has told me that whenever he hears people use an adjective like "Mexican" to describe someone, he immediately considers it an inappropriate term, until he reminds himself it's 100% accurate and appropriate if the person being described is, in fact, from Mexico.

Me too. It also sounds terribly inappropriate. :)
