First, circa X-force # 50, then also Busiek has him as a member of the Triune Understanding during his Avengers run.

You know, I've said it before, but had the non-Uncanny issues had better artwork, this series would have been much more fondly remembered. The story itself moves along nicely, and has some nice character moments sprinkled throughout at the same time. Other than the color of Storm's outfit changing colors inbetween issues, there isn't a disconnect between Simonson and her artist here. So while the issue itself definitely took a tumble off Ugly Cliff and hit a dozen boulders on the way down, it does at least flow much smoother than the previous installment that Liefeld drew.

Plus, it is fun to actually see all 3 X-teams (well, 2 and a half teams, I suppose, at this point) working together, something we've never seen prior to this.

But...damn. Jon Bogdanove + Allen Milgrom on inks? Get ready for some really ugly looking issues. Also, you notice some interesting artistic tics, including:
* Not only does his Cyclops barely seem to keep a skull cap, he seems to have a thing for shirtless Cyclops as well. In each issue of this crossover he draws, Scott will have his uniform blasted to shreds (though of course, there is always enough to cover his junk ;)
* Ditto for half-naked and mask-less Wolverine as well
* Jean stays clothed, but for some reason Jean always seems to take her mask off when Bogdonave draws her.

I guess he isn't a fan of drawing characters with masks on or something?

wwk5dnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-767385380802453902015-09-25T20:31:27.610-05:002015-09-25T20:31:27.610-05:00I do like that this issue feels like a real team-u...
I do like that this issue feels like a real team-up amongst the branches of the X-Men family.

// Cyclops tries to physically knock some sense into his brother, just like when they were kids. //

Alex’s “Why does this seem so familiar?” line as Scott repeatedly slams his head to the ground is hilarious.

// There's a neat moment at the end of the issue where Cable and Cyclops plan out their next move which gains a little something when you know the characters will later be revealed to be father and son. //

I thought so. Also? So much for “Slim Summers”; Bogdanove draws Cyclops as massive as Cable. His pencils are disappointing here, as they mostly were earlier (in my personal reading timeline) on The Man of Steel, based on previous work of his.

Blamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07342343767763035991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-35273914033895994202015-09-25T17:15:04.221-05:002015-09-25T17:15:04.221-05:00I tend to agree with your thoughts on the art, Tee...I tend to agree with your thoughts on the art, Teebore. Jon Bogdanove is, certainly, not a bad artist. On the right series and the right character(s), he can be enjoyable (his run on SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL comes to mind). But, alongside Jim Lee's X-Men and Rob Liefeld's New Mutants, it, definitely, felt like a poor fit for the X-books at the time. For some reason, I've never been particularly fond of his style. I had always wished that Whilce Portacio could have jumped on to X-FACTOR a few months sooner (and that Liefeld could have hit those deadlines...but, that's a different complaint). The artwork on the crossover, as a whole, would have been amped up, considerably.Cerebronoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-9308550558768993572015-09-25T15:29:51.883-05:002015-09-25T15:29:51.883-05:00Yes, I was aware of that costume too when I wrote ...Yes, I was aware of that costume too when I wrote my comment, so I was speaking in terms of regular costumes.
And I wish to retract my earlier comment about being introduced to Doug via this crossover. Actually, it was Douglock and the Phalanx Covenant that was the intro. I am really sorry for this mistake. angmc43@hotmail.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15379700547226493861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-3406858014821567532015-09-25T12:40:41.467-05:002015-09-25T12:40:41.467-05:00angmc43 -- I'm sure you're speaking in ter...angmc43 -- I'm sure you're speaking in terms of his regular costumes and not one-off outfits, so understand I'm not trying to be pedantic when I mention that we shouldn't forget about this look, which Cyclops wore for one issue of X-MEN in 1994.

If I recall correctly, it was provided by SHIELD or something.Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14580725636327122073noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-65528750694064741722015-09-25T00:37:22.812-05:002015-09-25T00:37:22.812-05:00angmc43: It should be noted that in this issue, wh...angmc43: It should be noted that in this issue, when Cyclops' costume gets blown off, he never wears a skullcap again until Joss Whedon's X-run.

Great note. Doesn't it go for Havok too that it's open hair business for him too from henceforth, we've seen the last of the black uniform?

One would btw think the Genoshans wouldn't exactly be interested in having Havok in any role, it having been specifically him who blew up the Citadel at the end of the original Genosha story.Teemunoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-76549730167139541792015-09-24T18:00:12.724-05:002015-09-24T18:00:12.724-05:00Indeed, that part of Sam and Roberto weeping over ...Indeed, that part of Sam and Roberto weeping over Boom Boom's father rant also bothers me pictorially (although it is in-character of Roberto to be angered by such paternal disrespect. I just don't understand what Bogdanove was trying to accomplish with her. She looks too much like Reagan to me for it to be a coincidence, so what is the statement he's trying to make?? All I get out of it is a visual that's bizarre and kind of unsettling.Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14580725636327122073noreply@blogger.com
