And the whole Blitz theory is a nice explanation for why we haven't seen him before (and likely won't again), though I would have preferred the Blitz curse go to someone else, and not back to Hurley, at the end.

it just felt like David E. Kelley as his most regrettable, with no real reason.

It was definitely random, out-nowhere, and largely pointless (there are plenty of other ways Sue could have reached an epiphany about bullying).

I mean the whole wedding, not the choral arrangements and choreography, normally a bugaboo for me ["I guess since Sectionals are this weekend, we should come up with a set list..."]

Oh, yeah, that was beyond ridiculous. Just like with Sectionals preparation, time in the Glee universe apparently works differently than ours.

it really bugged me that she offered him only inappropriate nicknames with no sense, to me, of a wink that it was affectionate or even appropriate bonding in any way.

Agreed, I would have liked that scene handled differently, with her offering him generic or non-offensive nicknames (because of course she's still going to use nicknames) or the same ones she did, but by making it seem they were more affectionate coming from her (which, I think, is what they were going for but failed utterly).

Basically, the whole nicknaming thing undermined the the rest of Sue's characterization in the episode, and that was disappointing.

Sudeikis as Billy Ray Cyrus here (like his approach to Joe Biden and other political figures, though I like the guy as more of a straight man)

I do too. My favorite Sudeikis bit is when he'd do the ESPN commentary with Will Forte, and would have to both respond to Forte's kooky, clueless commentary and deliver all the hilarious ad slogans for the feminine product du jour that was sponsoring the event.

Vanessa Bayer's Miley Cyrus, on the other hand, is a perfect marriage of spot-on mimicry and inherently ridiculous subject.

Indeed. I think that's why like it so much: it covers both of SNL's approaches to impressions.Austin Gortonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14281239771248780430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-63353679784199914592010-12-04T12:09:15.268-06:002010-12-04T12:09:15.268-06:00The Blitz episode of HIMYM was a bit of a letdown,...
The Blitz episode of HIMYM was a bit of a letdown, although it got better as it went on, and I was happy to see another character having established history with the group.

Sue marrying herself was just kind-of over-the-top stupid and, maybe worse, oddly self-contained — a parallel to the other wedding, yes, but... I don't know, it just felt like David E. Kelley as his most regrettable, with no real reason.

As for that other wedding, I was less taken out of the show by the focus on the kids (the kind of thing I write off by filling in my own details and saying, well, that's just the part we saw due to the subject of the series) and much more by... They did that in, like, a week?!? I mean the whole wedding, not the choral arrangements and choreography, normally a bugaboo for me ["I guess since Sectionals are this weekend, we should come up with a set list..."]. At no point until the wedding was imminent did I think it would occur in this episode.

I like Sue having some dimensionality as well, and your analysis of her standing up against the bullying is apt, but it really bugged me that she offered him only inappropriate nicknames with no sense, to me, of a wink that it was affectionate or even appropriate bonding in any way.

Hathaway doing Katie Holmes was a marvel not only for its quality but just on the basis of being one of those delightful surprise impressions of someone you never think of being, er, impressionable — at least not in their actual voice and mannerisms; SNL and other venues will happily fall back on making fun of someone through dialogue or actions or both, simply delivering the lines like a vaguely crazy person. Sudeikis as Billy Ray Cyrus here (like his approach to Joe Biden and other political figures, though I like the guy as more of a straight man) is an example of that, but Hathaway's Holmes was a low-key revelation; the return of Vanessa Bayer's Miley Cyrus, on the other hand, is a perfect marriage of spot-on mimicry and inherently ridiculous subject.

Blamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07342343767763035991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-90158500111337327832010-12-01T08:42:05.208-06:002010-12-01T08:42:05.208-06:00@Anne: Yeah, that blows.@Anne: Yeah, that blows.Austin Gortonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14281239771248780430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-13729314036118155412010-11-30T18:32:41.118-06:002010-11-30T18:32:41.118-06:00no we have it back now. but it's not the same...no we have it back now. but it's not the same knowing what we missed. it's going to take forever to catch up because all the tv we'd normally watch this week has to be pushed to the backburner to find the episodes from last weekAnne Ahiershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04695186823472404436noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-9843032368817689282010-11-30T17:43:11.584-06:002010-11-30T17:43:11.584-06:00@Falen: i laughed out loud at that Moe line regard...@Falen: i laughed out loud at that Moe line regarding Detroit

Yeah, it's an easy joke, but a funny one.

@Anne: sad boosh- i miss our tv

Did you get it back yet?
