She's kind of similar in skill-set to Black Widow, so I can see why she's never been a big breakout star, but I think she's got a cooler visual and in general I find her a much more compelling character than the Widow.Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14580725636327122073noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-6690408766087140102015-12-17T17:10:52.787-06:002015-12-17T17:10:52.787-06:00". I know that Silver Sable and Sandman eventually become part of Silver Sable's bounty hunter/mercenary team the Wild Pack (which, in true 90s fashion, gets its own series for awhile), but I have no idea if this particular assortment of characters ever popped up as a group outside this issue."

Funny, I had no idea the Outlaws ever appeared outside a Spider-Man comic!

The Outlaws first came together in 1989's WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #50 by Gerry Conway and Alex Saviuk. I believe they were assembled by Silver Sable to catch Spider-Man when he was accused of some crime, but it's been a while so I can't recall for sure. I also don't think the group was named in that issue. They officially became the Outlaws in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #169 a year or so later, by Conway and Sal Buscema, in which Spidey enlisted them to help him fight the Avengers (due to a misunderstanding caused by the Space Phantom). I think they had a backup serial in the '89 or '90 Spider-Man annuals as well.

Though it should be noted the team here isn't exactly the same as in their prior appearances. In WEB, they consisted of Silver Sable, Sandman, Rocket Racer, Prowler, Puma, and Will O' The Wisp. The SPECTACULAR appearance dropped Silver and Will. Looks like here, they've also ditched Puma but regained Silver (which make sense as she was their occasional employer) and gained Paladin, as well.

I love, love, love, love, love Gerry Conway's tenure writing WEB and SPECTACULAR in the late eighties.Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14580725636327122073noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-78199131671013816972015-12-17T13:50:28.234-06:002015-12-17T13:50:28.234-06:00This takes place during the brief time when old sc...This takes place during the brief time when old school Spider-Man villain Sandman reformed

Not so brief. It's a beautiful story arc that started in Marvel Two-In-One #86 (1982), when he and Hydro-Man very innuendo-ladenly separates from the Mudmonster they formed together and he finds himself boozing with Ben Grimm and questioning his life, and then soon afterwards brings a sixpack and cigars to Ben in hospital where he's recovering from the fight with the Champion. It's a goddamn crime they went to undo that.Teemunoreply@blogger.com
