It's because most of the other situations were either collaborations from the start — even off the books, working at home — or were a case of an editor and/or a primary creator getting his spouse/partner a job in an ancillary position. To have Louise writing the series and Walt, not only an established artist but (albeit more recently) an established writer in his own right, joining her feels potentially awkward; more than that, it just feels weird, not that I doubt they made it work. You think regular writer/artist teams have friction sometimes? Wait 'til "Honey, I don't think this works." "It works. It's just not how you would do it."

And of course that reminded me of Kathryn and Stuart Immonen, a phenomenon that popped up during my unplanned hiatus from comics. They've co-written stuff but I think they've also been in the Simonson position of her writing and him drawing.

More husband/wife collaborators that popped up in my head: Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer. Matt Madsen and Jessica Abel, although I don't know if they worked together directly outside of their comics textbooks. Dave Roman and Raina Telgemeier on a few little things at least.

Blamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07342343767763035991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-69350131227583004852013-10-31T19:54:46.778-05:002013-10-31T19:54:46.778-05:00// making X-Factor one of the few occasions in whi...
// making X-Factor one of the few occasions in which a husband and wife worked on the same book together //

I couldn't help but brainstorm some other examples upon reading this.

Lois Buhalis and Tom Orzechowski have lettered some of the stuff we've been reading together, as noted before. Another husband/wife team with X-Men credits is Len and Glynis (Oliver) Wein; I haven't looked back to see if she colored the issues he wrote, but she probably worked on issues he edited. Michelle Wolfman also colored books edited and/or written by Marv, I'm pretty sure. Dave Cockrum's Nightcrawler mini, among other stuff, was colored by Paty.

The Allreds have collaborated for years, with Laura doing colors, sometimes letters, and digital prep work on the stuff they co-published or packaged as well as other projects of Mike's. Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, of course. Roz Kirby inked work of Jack's, uncredited, that he inked himself; she would go over lines flat in pen and fill blacks, after which Jack would come in to add varying line widths and textures with brushes.

Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly co-edited Raw.

Roy and Dann Thomas co-plotted or flat-out co-wrote stuff. I'm not sure I've ever seen solo credits for Tom and Mary Bierbaum. Leah Moore and John Reppion write together.

Tatjana Wood, later well known as a colorist at DC Comics, made uncredited contributions to Wally Wood's art early in his career. Some of Brian Bolland's Animal Man covers, per an interview I did with him, were colored by his wife but not credited so it didn't complicate paperwork at DC.

David Mazzuchelli had Batman: Year One colored by Richmond Lewis, and they both contributed individual work to their experimental co-publication Rubber Blanket.

I'm not actually disagreeing that Walt and Louise Simonson's collaboration is a rarity, believe it or not. These examples are still a drop in the bucket compared to all the work out there. I just thought it was a fun little exercise, because I'm weird that way.

Blamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07342343767763035991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-59832415429831437042013-10-31T19:40:39.139-05:002013-10-31T19:40:39.139-05:00// Candy takes it the wrong way //

On the other hand, I know that they're a staple of soap opera, besides which on that top panel of the block you posted Warren is definitely lost in the sweet scent of Jean's Alberto VO5.

So is Apocalypse behind the Marauders or did he just pop in to take advantage of the chaos and recruit Plague? He goes through Harpoon to get to Plauge, but says the Marauders are doing his will, but it's not clear that Harpoon and Sabretooth know him, but of course he could be a shadowy mastermind they haven't met. And if that's the case, I wonder if the whattayacallem group Tower belonged to were technically Marauders.

I know this is all bedrock mythology to you guys, but as I've mentioned ad nauseum we're already out of my era of X-Men here and I tended to really keep these titles at a distance after that.

Blamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07342343767763035991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-49779724303399014742013-10-31T19:38:09.070-05:002013-10-31T19:38:09.070-05:00The new logo is a definite improvement.

She's been hanging out in the Freedom Force headquarters under the Pentagon — and even interacting with Val Cooper, but not in a way that suggests Val knows she's Raven.

// We learn of three more members of the Marauders this issue //

Blockbuster was the last straw for me. After Scalphunter and Vertigo that makes three Marauders named after older DC characters, which can't be a coincidence. I'm not saying there was outright theft or even an homage going on, but even though he's not exactly a top-tier villain Blockbuster at least I think of as well known enough that there had to be a conscious decision to use the name anyway after somebody in the creative/editorial chain pointed it out.

Meanwhile, "Tarbaby" is still so, so, so wrong.

Blamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07342343767763035991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-30888903438946441852013-10-30T17:41:24.102-05:002013-10-30T17:41:24.102-05:00@Drew: I think it's somewhat entertaining how ...@Drew: I think it's somewhat entertaining how Marvel Girl destroyed Prism by accident, and didn't bother getting angsty about it because she was protecting her friends.

Yeah, I really like that Jean doesn't get all angtsy about that. This just goes back to how cool Jean was. Pity they keep her dead while resurrecting everyone else.

Someone really should have informed Angel that the sewers, with their limited surroundings and cloying environment, wasn't the best place for someone called The High Flying Angel to enter. Cyclops and Beast are both unable to walk, which means Jean has to telekinetically bring them back to HQ, while Iceman is suffering from the effects of Vertigo's power, so he can walk and use his power, but just barely.

So that just leaves Angel, and to Simonson's credit, a point is made that his wings are pretty useless in the tunnels, and he does about as well against a group of super-powered mass murderers as you'd expect a normal person to do (not well). To say he even puts up a fight would be generous. He gets one punch in on Vertigo and then it's pretty much just all Marauders.

(There's also a sense that he knows attacking them is suicide, but he feels he deserves what he gets for screwing up with Candy and X-Factor, something that will continue to play out as he gets increasingly more maudlin in the issues ahead).

Basically, what it boils down to is that Iceman needed to nut up.
