Maybe that's why I have so much fondness for this issue. All of the New Mutants -- even leaders Sam and Dani, who really should be setting a better example, and even Warlock, who doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body (or any bones in his body, really) -- give in to their anger, all of them are prepared to sink to Empath's level. Until Doug -- whose power, after all, is communication -- makes them realize what a mistake that would be.

It's doubly impressive when you realize that Doug managed to hold off the one time he FINALLY had a chance to mix it up physically. Every other New Mutant gets to be involved in action scenes, and the guy who's always getting left out FINALLY gets his wish, a chance to be the Tough Guy and punch out the villain... and he gives up what he's longed for since the beginning. Because as great as it would feel, it wouldn't be right. It's that extra little self-sacrifice, along with being the voice of reason, that makes Doug one of my favorites.

(For substantially similar, though diametrically opposite reasons, Sunspot has always been one of my LEAST favorite New Mutants. Oh, you're worried about becoming a villain, Bobby? Maybe you should stop insulting your friends for not giving in to revenge, or throwing trees at them during a soccer game. Just a thought, dick.)Drewnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-59879713015679238902013-09-30T20:17:17.206-05:002013-09-30T20:17:17.206-05:00Eat your heart out, Arcade.
Maybe I'm losing ...
Eat your heart out, Arcade.

Maybe I'm losing my sense of wonder, but I have to call bandersnatch on Bobby and his mom hearing Sam outside the airplane.

Favorite line: "Mrs. DaCosta, Would it be okay to teleport Bobby straight to the school?"

There's just something weird about all the students standing around in their uniforms or formal dress while a teacher — even their dance teacher — saunters up wearing a swimsuit (major cleavage or no, and it's not no).

I like the idea of the kids playing "X-Factor" but was shocked to see Empath make Ann's friends deathly afraid of her, not because of his behavior but because his thought balloon indicates that the change is open-ended: "I filled their hearts with mortal terror. From this day forth, whenever they see you, Ann, they will remember this fear. They are your friends no more." He can affect emotions permanently, like just flicking a switch? That is an insane level of power.

Blamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07342343767763035991noreply@blogger.com
