For one, I don't know how many of these commercials ran for their comic. I did reread the first twelve issues a few weeks back, and for the most part, it's actually a solid book for the era.G. You almost wonder how many times Hama said to himself, "no, I already did a military parade, I can't do that again" when faced with the need to work in a bunch of new vehicles.

The push-and-pull between the comics as adverts for the toys and as finite pieces of entertainment in their own right fascinates me. It's really unlike anything except maybe the Transformers book, in that it's licensing an ongoing property with new IPs being generated elsewhere (whereas, say, the Star Wars comic more or less does it own thing - within established boundaries - to expand the story between movies). It really is to Hama's credit that you can read some of the more "inspired by new toys" issues and not have that inspiration immediately smack you in the face. I really, really intend to get to it, and the follow-up material, someday!

Also, I still think that's Chris Latte voicing Cobra Commander, just in a totally different direction than he'd ultimately take the character.Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14580725636327122073noreply@blogger.com
