Yeah, ...@Dr. Bitz: You just start from episode 1.

Yeah, I think it's just that back in the day, I had no idea which of the three series was the first. Nowadays, it'd be easier, what with the internet and all. But then I'd also have to find/read the books, and find a resource that tells me when to do that, etc.

At the same time, if you’re importing a show that only had a 26 episode run...then maybe mangling it up with other series is not the best way to go.

Yeah, I definitely wasn't trying to advocate trying to wedge loosely connected series into a mold in order to artificially lengthen a finite series. Just expressing the sentiment that, in general, if a show is good, I'm of the opinion that I want as much of it as possible, and that limiting a series to a set number of episodes isn't automatically a good thing. You just start from episode 1. :)

Also, while I understand the argument that shows shouldn't necessarily be restricted to something like 26 episodes and a good show can be good for a much longer run. At the same time, if you’re importing a show that only had a 26 episode run...then maybe mangling it up with other series is not the best way to go. (Then again, maybe it is...cuz I do love me my Robotech.)

@Matt - I caught Cowboy Bebop first on Adult Swim way back when and it took me a while to get into it. One reason was because everything else on Adult Swim (at the time) was a comedy so I was confused as to whether I should find it funny. Beyond that, the show does homages to many different genres. That can make Cowboy Bebop hard to digest.

But, like you, after a few episodes I really started to dig it. Vicious helped too...he’s pretty sweet but he always reminds me of Sephiroth...

I too got upset that Gargoyle's stopped producing DVD's after "Season Two: Part One". I ended up catching the rest of the episodes on Disney XD (I don't think that channel shows them anymore, though).

I finally broke down and bought a bootlegged copy of the episodes. That doesn't completely jive with my ethics, but I figure that if they had the rest of the episodes available I'd buy them, I could have transferred them from my DVR if I wanted to, and if the DVDs ever do become available I'll buy them. So that’s how I justify the bootlegged copies.

Regarding Robotech, I too caught it on Toonami. But for some odd reason they never showed the third part of the series (The New Generation). I ended up reading the books first so I knew what happened in The New Generation but I was excited when Robotech came out on DVD because I could finally see the final section of Robotech. I enjoyed it, for sure, but I was a little let down. Let’s just say the books smoothed out some of the…rougher…edges the cartoon had.
@Spithead – SVU is still an ongoing series so it doesn’t qualify for ranking. It (and CI) certainly has the quality of hooking me after the first five minutes, but SVU has a tendency to get SUPER zany. That Robin Williams episode was off the charts.
I haven’t seen enough of Criminal Intent to rank it, but I did enjoy it on some level. But two things bothered me about the show. One, it delved into the personal lives of the detectives too much for my taste. Two, they show scenes involving suspects that the detectives aren’t a part of. I don’t like that in a procedural. It’s giving the viewer more information than the detectives. And the fact they that usually use those scenes to deliberately mislead the viewer just feels like cheating.Dr. Bitzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13568570859981368717noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-30056388837806226202013-01-08T13:36:51.624-06:002013-01-08T13:36:51.624-06:00So, you have any opinion on SVU or Criminal Intent...So, you have any opinion on SVU or Criminal Intent?Spitheadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08434638331512076136noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-29736838144051360342013-01-08T12:09:18.832-06:002013-01-08T12:09:18.832-06:00Wow, I agree with all of these except Law & Or...Wow, I agree with all of these except Law & Order, which I've never really watched. Though I do find that as you said, if I happen to catch the beginning of an episode, I will watch the rest of it even though I've never been a regular viewer.

I was sick with the flu a couple weeks ago and watched about six episodes of TNG on BBC America. I don't revisit the series often (like Teebore, I prefer DS9), but whenever I do, it's just a comforting feeling. Seasons 3 - 5 were the high point in my opinion. In season 1 they were still finding their feet. Season 2 is fun, but still has some of the glitches of season 1 carried over. Seasons 6 and 7, with few exceptions (such as "Chain of Command") basically became the "Picard & Data" show (foreshadowing the movies), in which every other episode was about Data dreaming. Or at leas that's how I remember them.

I was not sure what to make of Bebop when I first watched it, but it won me over by episode 4 or 5 (the one that introduces Vicious), and though I haven't watched it in years, it still has a promnent spot on my DVD shelf.

It's been at least five or more years, and I'm still pissed at Disney for not releasing the rest of Gargoyles on DVD. I would love to re-watch the whole thing, but I only have season 1 and half of season 2. That show was phenomenal.

I missed Robotech when I was younger, and found it on Toonami in college, but I was still young enough to become hooked, I guess. I love that show.Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14580725636327122073noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-15428112709152404062013-01-08T09:38:45.470-06:002013-01-08T09:38:45.470-06:00Somehow I've managed to avoid getting sucked i...Somehow I've managed to avoid getting sucked in by Law & Order; I've seen a few episodes, because, you know, I'm alive and own a TV, but I've never watched a serious chunk of them. Though I totally understand the appeal of the occasional "plot first" procedural, despite our shared preference for more arc-based narratives.

Cowboy Bebop is another one of those anime I've heard about (a lot) but never watched.

I've always been pretty vocal in my preference of Deep Space Nine over TNG, though there's no denying TNG is a fantastic show, and I share some of your nostalgic fondness for it (it was my gateway into Trek), as well as the propensity to stop and watch it if I see that it's on.

I've definitely what I've seen of Gargoyles so far, but we need to watch some more, stat!

I managed to somehow completely miss the boat on Robotech; it's one of the few toy based/Japanese import/action based cartoons of the 80s that I was completely ignorant of until I was much older. And while I admire the sprawling complexity of it, that's always made it harder for me to get motivated about tracking it down and watching it.

But the powers that be determined that 26 episodes wasn't enough for an American cartoon.

Call me a Luddite if you will (or a victim of the circumstances of my upbringing), but I've always kinda agreed with that sentiment. I know hipster types like to rave about the restrained model of British and Japanese television series that tell their stories in a small, finite number of episodes, but damn it, if I like something, I want more of it, not less!

This list has taken so long that I've actually watched and finished some series since my initial rankings. So I'll review those shows before heading to the Top 5.

Okay, now you're just totally teasing us with the top 5.Austin Gortonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14281239771248780430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-49510411524435730582013-01-07T20:22:19.590-06:002013-01-07T20:22:19.590-06:00Okay, I still love me some Law and Order. The first episode I actually sat down and watched ended up being the last episode of the series. Pissed me off. It took me a long time to watch it from the beginning. Love.

TNG is probably my favorite show of all time. I mean, it has to be. I don't care what time it, what episode it is, or what I'm doing, there's always time for an hour or 10 of TNG.

I need to do a Gargoyles rewatch.
