It was especially heartening for me, because after "X-Cutioner's Song" I had dropped everything but this. (Still a PAD loyalist.) And it was so heartening to see that X-Factor going forward was going to be AWESOME.

I was also surprised by Samson's reveal at the end, despite that this month's Hulk (also by PAD of course), which I bought the same night and which was waiting for me on the coffee table to read as soon as I finished X-Factor, had a cover which boasted "The Return of Doc Samson!"Jasonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13298753675007196538noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-10718238104517319642017-05-27T22:47:57.030-05:002017-05-27T22:47:57.030-05:00I think the colorful "garbage bags" are ...I think the colorful "garbage bags" are supposed to be the contents of a candy dish.Patrick Rhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02410016566636603639noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-37448227365147391212017-05-12T00:19:07.093-05:002017-05-12T00:19:07.093-05:00I’m not sure how to take Val’s assessments of her ...
I’m not sure how to take Val’s assessments of her team. When introduced she was a Them, not an Us, in terms of our protagonists but over time — since the 1991 restructuring of the line, for sure — that changed. Is David throwing her character under the bus for the sake of a gag, or establishing a key element of her role in the JLI-style sitcom aspect of the book? [Maybe unanswerable given his departure a couple of issues from “now”.]

Since I had zero recollection that Lorna’s body issues had become a subplot, her dialogue here really hit me out of left field. I’ll allow that she wouldn’t necessarily be immune to such feelings just because she’s a superhero in empirically incredible shape (and that personal issues often get added to characters who were created in times where that wasn’t done so much) but it struck me as a big awkward thing to drop on the reader. PTSD from Malice controlling her for so long, on the other hand, makes perfect sense. Then, in another bit that’s unclear to me in terms of David’s intentions, Samson points out a supposed irony in Lorna’s having magnetic powers but feeling unattractive. Is that epic-fail wordplay on the part of a character being presented as too clever by half or a writer unable to curb such tendencies? I’d tell Samson to f*** off in so many words, too.

My biggest question, though, is how the hell David missed the opportunity to further hint at Samson’s identity by having him compliment Lorna’s hair.

Blamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07342343767763035991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-50585112378520896802017-05-04T20:25:40.692-05:002017-05-04T20:25:40.692-05:00Everyone obviously immediately notices that the &q...Everyone obviously immediately notices that the "Mutant Mutant Angst Angst" song goes to the tune of the Ren&Stimpy classic Happy Happy Joy Joy. Gotta love how the record throwing by Simpy reminds me of one of my favorite episodes, "Sven Hoek". The others are "Jiminy Lummox" and the one where they were part of the Soviet space program.

I only got around to reading this very recently, and totally did not see it coming that the psychiatrist was Doc Samson. Just like the way any random group of six friends will likely be going through different trials in their lives given their background, upbringing, etc. That relatability really sells this issue to me.
Anyone, fictional or real, who's "perfectly wel-adjusted" would be sort of boring to x-amine, wouldn't you say? :)
I also think this is joe's best art period, it's the first I think of when I think of him as and artist (but not EIC).Soanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15061437329738195591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-87281828151802467052017-05-04T18:26:35.564-05:002017-05-04T18:26:35.564-05:00I really like Joe Quesada's artwork at this ph...I really like Joe Quesada's artwork at this phase of his career. This is probably my favorite phase for him, in fact.

Questionable though Polaris's costume may be, I do think certain aspects of it look really cool. I like that it's all shiny gold metal, for example, and I like the color scheme. Why she stands up on her tippy-toes as she reveals it to Samson is a mystery, though.

The story is fine, though I find it odd that every member of the team needs to have some psychological issue. Can't one of them be perfectly well-adjusted?Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14580725636327122073noreply@blogger.com
