But in any case, I really liked it, and still do. This is possibly my favorite single Lobdell UNCANNY issue; if nothing else it's definitely my favorite Lobdell "quiet" issue. I love stories where the X-Men are presented as a family, and for me, moreso than Christmas or any other occasion, Thanksgiving day, hanging out and goofing off while waiting for dinner, is the perfect family setting.

Thankfully (no pun intended), Marvel printed the correctly restored pages in their THE WEDDING OF CYCLOPS AND PHOENIX trade paperback a few years ago, so there are no missing word balloons in the collected edition!

Also, I've never heard of building scarecrows on Thanksgiving either. I wonder where Scott Lobdell is from? Maybe it's a regional thing.Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14580725636327122073noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-33519983631723825502018-02-22T08:57:30.239-06:002018-02-22T08:57:30.239-06:00I think this issue and next are probably the best ...I think this issue and next are probably the best examples of Lobdell's quiet issues. I love how steeped both are with X-Men history and, as a transplanted Midwesterner in Los Angeles, fall and winter stories will always be a little extra special for me. I miss seasons! I feel like Romita Jr's art turns a corner here as well. It seems crisper and cleaner. Was there a new inker or colorist starting this issue? Anyway, great issue all around.Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14447265712189987074noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-42828635691299021122018-02-22T07:06:58.809-06:002018-02-22T07:06:58.809-06:00// the promo pics of Scott & Jean's weddin...
// the promo pics of Scott & Jean's wedding … were by the late Mike Wieringo //

I meant to mention that as well. His art is so distinctive — and so much more to my taste than most of what we’re seeing on X-Titles in this era. I’d forgotten he drew that piece until the ads here jogged my memory in a very bittersweet way.

Blamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07342343767763035991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-77600048668728327502018-02-22T06:23:54.304-06:002018-02-22T06:23:54.304-06:00I LOVE this issue, too. It was a revelation to young me that a woman could propose to a man like Jean did, and even if you were just coming into the comics from TV (like I was), the flashbacks do an excellent job of showing just how much more than what you've seen Scott & Jean have been through. Count me among your fellow shippers.

I also liked Forge & Bishop's interaction during the raking & the later football game. It made me wish these two had more scenes together, since they played off each other really well as friends. Also, add me to the people who've never heard of making scarecrows as a Thanksgiving tradition; we did raking if the weather was nice but never scarecrows.

Finally, little bit of trivia - the promo pics of Scott & Jean's wedding in the Entertainment This Month ad & in later house ads were by the late Mike Wieringo (a personal favorite). I think it's one of the few times besides the Rogue mini where he drew the X-Men & I wish he could've done some more with the characters (especially a good series, unlike the mini). I actually prefer his wedding dress design to Vera Wang's sausage casing dress.Melahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05539894845356203447noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-92435817455141932018-02-22T02:01:25.496-06:002018-02-22T02:01:25.496-06:00Can the second writer not have been intentionally ...Can the second writer not have been intentionally winding up the first writer for making the mistake the first time?

Spider-Man once was told by the Spot to "stop harnessing the Kingpin"... were I a writer, I certainly couldn't help myself from doing a jab towards the mistake.Teemunoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-38362804198546945292018-02-22T01:31:16.747-06:002018-02-22T01:31:16.747-06:00I’m a sucker for quiet, character-based issues lik...
I’m a sucker for quiet, character-based issues like this that look back as some decision is made or some big change lies on the horizon, and this one was executed pretty well.

Romita does a nice job with the original uniforms.

As for making a scarecrow on Thanksgiving, I’ve never heard of that as a tradition either.

Blamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07342343767763035991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-17139886356376999962018-02-21T21:38:04.743-06:002018-02-21T21:38:04.743-06:00Because I've already expressed my love for Lob...Because I've already expressed my love for Lobdell's quiet issues, I'm instead going to address something that came up a lot in the X-Books at this time, and, oddly, in both titles, which meant that both Lobdell and Nicenza did it, and it's nagged at me for 25 years now:

Using "parameter" when "perimeter" was meant, as happens in this issue.

For the life of me, I never got why that happened with two different writers, but it happened about half a dozen times in 1993, and I don't know why no one in editorial seemed to notice.

The things that stay with you twenty five years later...Jackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00605826105741513741noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-30568907551516583722018-02-21T18:42:28.812-06:002018-02-21T18:42:28.812-06:00"I was a huge Scott/Jean 'shipper as a ki..."I was a huge Scott/Jean 'shipper as a kid (though I certainly hadn't yet encountered that specific term yet), deeply invested in the state of their relationship with the zeal and high emotion for fictional characters that is hard to muster outside of childhood & adolescence..."

You & me both, Austin. I was a HUGE Scott & Jean shipper growing up and was excited beyond all reason when it was clear they were finally heading towards matrimony.

I agree it was a nice touch to have Jean propose. I also feel like it was a great way to address the previously established concern that Jean was feeling coerced into her relationship with Scott due to her retaining the memories of both Madelyn and Phoenix!Jean.

Of course Gambit would be the type of guy to wear compression shorts with nothing layered over them. He's SO that guy.

I also loved Rogue's reaction to the engagement announcement: "About time, shugah!"Notorious J.O.E.https://www.blogger.com/profile/16981069985099562942noreply@blogger.com
