It's got to be one of his earliest Marvel scripts. It's a cute little story, as I recall.

I seem to recall there being something confusing about the Beast story, but it's been so long. I think I was confused about the apes no longer following the Red Ghost. Something about it was odd ... alas, it's all faded from my brain.

I actually like both Liefeld and Jae Lee's work in this one.Jasonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13298753675007196538noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-7260800964352521882016-03-27T00:43:07.650-05:002016-03-27T00:43:07.650-05:00// I have no idea which cover is the "real&qu...
// I have no idea which cover is the "real" one //

They both are, often, but either way you get to choose which one faces out.

Lobdell is doing his best Peter David impression here, seems to me. Although I don’t know how representative this is of his work overall, only having read a bit of his X-Men family stuff circa ’93-94 and not remembering it well… He does do a decent job with the pacing, yeah. On the other hand there’s a panel in #89 of a semi-conscious Red Ghost saying “Vas?” because, you know, German and Russian are basically the same thing.

Jae Lee’s stuff hardly resembles his upcoming stint on Namor, to say nothing of his later work.

Blamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07342343767763035991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-29288122305226337662016-03-25T15:43:50.380-05:002016-03-25T15:43:50.380-05:00The Constrictor is fun. Introduced as the world's greatest assassin (his words), but then caught by the henchman-with-a-conscience bug when the Viper hired him for a kill everyone plot and now he can't go through a storyline without siding with the hero at some point.

I think PAD made up the obnoxious Speed Freak character just so that not every original Hulk antagonists with adamantium hand appendages would go on to be totally something else in the Marvel Universe.

Speaking of whom, "separating boas from men" really makes Lobdell a poor man's Peter David.Teemunoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-52153680438975063432016-03-25T04:51:30.025-05:002016-03-25T04:51:30.025-05:00"cuz I have no idea which cover is the "..."cuz I have no idea which cover is the "real" one and thus which one should be featured and which should be covered up when bagging, boarding and boxing the issue."

I'd usually go by whichever character was the bigger name and/or whichever cover was drawn better.

It looks like this title is more or less an X-men title by this point, given all the other stories you listed happening in this title at the time.

"Apparently, when Ship was principally located hovering offshore, the post office had to send someone out via raft to deliver X-Factor's mail."

Which is still pretty inefficient when the thing is hovering high above the city...

"Issue #86 retcons Beast's Silver Age origin"

Given that nobody really references this story, its kind of a forgotten retcon, no?

"The early chapters of this story remind readers of Professor Xavier's Silver Age predilection for mind-wiping everyone in sight, revealing that Beast had a particularly hard time dealing with the erasure of Jennifer's memory after Xavier wiped out everyone in Beast's town."

See, this bit is a bit confusing...I always thought the Professor mind-wiped any references to the X-men or the person in question being a mutant...not that he wiped that person out completely from people's memories.

"a young Jae Lee (who isn't perfect, but is able to easily clear the relatively low bar of "better than Liefeld"

And unlike Liefeld, Lee would improve significantly over time...

Well this was a weird little...something. A story taking place during the reboot but definitely one that was planned long before it. In some ways, it is a throwback, given what was happening during the main titles at the time. And especially as you point out, the guest starring villains are from the wider Marvel Universe, and given how insular the X-titles become post reboot, it is a bit refreshing. While not essential at all, it is a quirky fun read.
wwk5dnoreply@blogger.com
