This, along with the Apocalypse based X-Factor files from that comic's Endgame arc, were always fun, insightful reads. I think it was because they provided psychological insights to the characters that I felt were lacking since Claremont departed.Notorious J.O.E.https://www.blogger.com/profile/16981069985099562942noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-74844516333193204952017-04-28T12:59:40.157-05:002017-04-28T12:59:40.157-05:00Stryfe believes that if Xavier & Magneto had w...Stryfe believes that if Xavier & Magneto had worked together, they could have solved mutantkinds problems.

Once they did, and Xavier boned his patient and Mags ran away with a hoard of nazi gold.

Teemunoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7266470995513648978.post-52472954802454167722017-04-28T02:15:18.019-05:002017-04-28T02:15:18.019-05:00Presumably, that idea was already in place, as Str...Presumably, that idea was already in place, as Stryfe teases Magneto's "inevitable" resurrection here.

At this point, we're only three UNCANNY issues away from developments on that one.

Next is Graydon Creed -clip- though his appearance here doesn't match his final look (it does match one of the characters depicted on the Upstarts card from the first set of X-Men cards, so presumably Stroman is working off of Jim Lee's notes/designs here).

The hair color is off, but this looks a lot like the gentleman who went to see the comatose Stevie Lang in Arlington hospice in UNCANNY #291, with some pointed notions about "Friends, with big F" in the dialogue with the nurse.

On general note, they printed these one or two at time in our X-Book issues of the era, and I always felt it was perfectly needless word-wankery and the space should rather have been used for the OHOTMU "presentations", the always much-loved feature. I had no idea the real-world version of Holocaust had ever appeared anywhere! Funny it took twenty-ish years for it to happen.

I feel like the X-books of the nineties get a ton of criticism for being poorly plotted and/or disorganized. And yes -- that certainly eventually became the case by the time of "Onslaught". But it's pretty evident from stuff like this one-shot that the early to mid-nineties were very well thought out, at least with regards to the two core X-books. As you said, they're teasing stuff a year or more away here! And a year later during "Fatal Attractions" and "Bloodties", there was a booklet narrated by Nick Fury stapled into a ton of Marvel comics which teased GENERATION X and some other stuff, also nearly a year away by that point.

(There's also an in-story bit during "Fatal Attractions" where Bishop tells Banshee he was the teacher of the next generation of mutants -- in UNCANNY #304, twelve issues/one year before "Phalanx Covenant" started and fourteen months prior to GENERATION X #1!)

I know the story content isn't for everyone, but I find it hard to argue that this stuff wasn't mostly well-coordinated and very deliberately plotted, at least at this point. (And based on that, I have to believe the image of Psylocke's two forms that you pointed out is most definitely meant as a teaser for the coming of Kwannon. It was only four months away at this point, after all.)Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14580725636327122073noreply@blogger.com
