X-aminations in May

A return to relative normalcy as we draw ever closer to the big two hundredth issue of X-Men, and take a look at two more favorite issues from the Claremont/Romita Jr. run. Also, remember Secret Wars? Well, it's back, as Secret Wars II begins (don't worry, I won't be reading the whole thing)!

May 1st: Uncanny X-Men #193
May 2nd: New Mutants #28

May 8th: Uncanny X-Men #194
May 9th: New Mutants #29

May 15th: Nightcrawler #1-4
May 16th: Power Pack #12 & Secret Wars II #1

May 22nd : Uncanny X-Men #195
May 23rd: New Mutants #30

May 29th: Uncanny X-Men #196
May 30th: New Mutants #31

  1. That list is getting busier all the time. One of the most fascinating things about this blog is that it lets you almost pinpoint the moment the X-Men titles went from slightly expanded to completely off the rails batshit. It's almost depressing. Right now, we're still in that nice "optional limited series" and "completely self contained crossover" period (with the exception of the close integration between the main book and NM, of course). But in a couple of years... look out. The sad part is that that will STILL be a cakewalk compared to the complete train wreck of today.

It's all here on this blog, laid out. You can go back, issue by issue, to a simpler time. You could study it and figure out where it went so horribly, horribly wrong...

  2. I'd given up on X-Men stuff myself by that time, but I remember a couple of early issues of What The--?! making fun of "Fall of the Mutants" or "Mutant Massacre" — whatever the big storyline was in... let's see... 1988. Written by Kurt Busiek and drawn by Kyle Baker, it was called "Mutant Beach Party" and was about the search for the last person who hadn't even appeared in the background of an X-Men story and thus had a decent shot of not being a mutant like everybody else turned out to be. So even Marvel was feeling the comically critical mass by then.

  3. Snow?? I could use some of that! It's been in the 90's all week here!

Yeah, I tend to think things are still manageable up until Claremont leaves, despite all the extra spinoffs and miniseries and what not. Up to that point, it still feels like it possible to (relatively easily) fit everything together in a way that makes some sense, mainly because Claremont made the effort.

But once he's gone and the 90s boom really takes off, whoo boy...

Rumors of our six inch snowfall have been greatly exaggerated, thank you very much. I had a little frost on my roof, and that was about it (though Dr. Bitz, only a few miles south of me, got a bit of accumulation).

Ordinarily I'd say I much prefer the cold and snow to 90s, but I can't deny this seemingly-neverending winter we're having is trying even my patience. Six inches or not, that we're even talking about snow on the second of May is ridiculous, even for Minnesota...
